Fasting at Vassar

According to the local paper, some students at Vassar College will be fasting today, in order to experience hunger and better empathize with the poor. Their ordeal will last from 10:00am until 5:00pm.

In other words, they are skipping lunch.

One senior at the school hopes that, by taking such extreme measures, they will draw attention to the plight of the less fortunate. "We hope it will spark political action," she says.

One can always hope.

  • Ally, If you succeeded in reminding other students of their obligations to society, I congratulate you.

However, the article did not stress the goal of raising awareness. Rather, it claimed the students would "experience what it's like to be hungry" in order to be "conscious on the holiday of the feeling they had just days before". That, too, would be a noble goal. But it can't be accomplished by skipping one meal. By suggesting that it could, the reporter made the students seem rather unserious, and thus trivialized the event.
